Our dogs, Chilli & Spice, have more playtime than ever! See how they are living there best life?
I wanted a home that didn't just meet a "net zero" target—I wanted one that performed for me. This is the story of how I reframed the energy challenge, moving beyond modesty and cutbacks to a new narrative of performance and prosperity. My goal was to not only increase my standard of living but to do so while significantly reducing costs. What began as a journey into a "comfort zone" of energy efficiency has now led me to the "panic zone" of pushing the boundaries, proving that we can live better and do more for less.
Building from Ground Up:
The Foundations of a Smart Home
The journey to a high-performance home starts with a pragmatic look at the barriers. For me, that meant a fundamental grasp of my core requirements, including home and car ownership, and the demands of daily life. I made a conscious choice to purchase a new build with a B-rated Energy Performance Certificate and off-street parking—essential foundations for futureproofing my decisions. The brutal truth is that your biggest dreams are often limited by the strength of your foundations. I knew that the choices I made at the start would determine the ultimate success of my entire project.
The Performance Mindset: Creating a Holistic Energy System.
My smart home isn’t a collection of gadgets; it's a holistic energy system designed for total performance. I knew the key was a seamless connection to everything, especially the National Grid. To achieve this, I focused on core principles: raising the EPC rating from B to A, installing a 4.86kWp solar PV system, and, most critically, integrating a 20kWh residential battery storage system.
The battery was my game-changer. By leveraging a smart time-of-use energy tariff, I can now store free electricity from my solar panels and import ultra-cheap, off-peak electricity from the grid. This means I never have to pay peak-rate prices again. Adding an electric vehicle (EV) was the final piece of the puzzle, allowing me to fully utilise the cheap energy I produce and store.
The result? My gas usage is now minimal, with only my combi boiler remaining—the last energy hurdle to overcome. This system has enabled me to achieve maximum energy efficiency and financial return on my investment, proving that true performance is about intelligent design, not just incremental savings.
The Numbers Don't Lie: Performance Beyond Expectation.
My philosophy was never to cut back, but to maximize performance and endurance in every aspect of my life. The results have been phenomenal. My electric vehicle, a top-spec Vauxhall Mokka-e, is now a financial asset. With smart charging through my energy provider, I've reduced my running costs to just 1p per mile, all while avoiding costly low-emission zone charges.
My £15,000 investment in solar PV and battery storage has been a resounding success. In just two years, I've not only eliminated my energy bills but have also been paid by my energy provider, receiving £4,500 in refunds. With a current credit of £400, I'm on track to achieve a full return on my investment within just three years. This system proves that living a high-performance life and achieving financial and environmental freedom are not mutually exclusive goals.
The Ultimate Payback: Time for What Matters.
This journey was always about more than just numbers. The real payback is the time and freedom I’ve gained. With a high-performance home that practically manages itself, I can now spend my time doing what I love, with the ones I love. I can jump in the car and travel to a beautiful spot to walk my little fluffy dogs, Chilli and Spice, and come home again essentially for free.
In the past year, my gas bill for a four-bedroom home was just £150—a figure I barely even consider now. The freedom to go out, get cold and muddy, have fun, and then return to a warm, dry home with almost no energy cost is the ultimate victory. My smart home has given me the time and financial freedom to fully enjoy life.
